Firehead Opera, a partner of Firehead Editions of London, offers performing editions of an exclusive collection of musico-dramatic works scored for small ensembles. Most works included on this site are available in their original piano/vocal forms. We do not intend to warehouse dozens of works in this place but to maintain an intentionally small selection instead. This allows us to offer the best music in an uncluttered way for your perusal and performance consideration. If you have come to know a work in our catalogue which is no longer posted here, contact us.

Each work is presented with a synopsis, character list (with voice types), complete libretto, and a few pages of the full score. Orchestrations are available where noted (often for strings and piano) and our composers are happy to expand beyond that to fit a given performance and ensemble.

Our aim is to further explore the operatic medium in a contemporary and living way. Each of the works available here can be successful with a minimum of staging and will stand alone, or may offer perspective on a well chosen program.

The collection of music for young voices is intended for school age children between the ages of 8 and 12 years. Older and younger performers are of course encouraged to participate at the director’s discretion. When a chorus is suggested, the part is scored in unison with occasional divisi. Each of these little operas will have a duration time of between 8 and 15 minutes. A rehearsal recording of any or all parts to assist cast members with their preparation is available for an additional fee.

The oratorios in our catalogue are typically scored for voices and organ. Whether staged and costumed or not, performances will find their richest expression in a cathedral space. The grandeur of a spacious acoustic served by a substantial instrument combined with the palette of imagery and light often found in large churches will aid storytelling profoundly in terms of its depth and meaning.

In general, you may purchase one copy of a complete piano/vocal score to print for your ensemble. All performances must be licensed (ticketed, or not) by the authorization of a simple contract between presenter and composer, and the payment of a flat fee. We routinely research a variety of media for performance announcements of our work. It is incumbent on presenters to properly apply for performance rights in advance of any performances, and without exception. Grand Rights for an extended run (beyond 5 performances in a calendar year) are negotiable as appropriate.

We hope you will enjoy these fascinating works and that you will find them to be compelling stories told through music. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us as we are happy to make your acquaintance.

Thank you, as ever, for your support,

The Creative Team at Firehead Editions
